In 2026, France will mark the centenary of Claude Monet’s death. In the Lot-et-Garonne Valley, this tribute takes on a very special significance. For it was here, in Le Temple-sur-Lot, thatone of the most beautiful stories of Impressionism began.

In 1889, atthe Paris World’s Fair, Joseph Bory Latour-Marliac presented a groundbreaking creation: the world’s first colourful hardy water lilies. Among the visitors was Claude Monet. Captivated by these new varieties, he ordered some for his garden in Giverny. A few years later, the famous ‘Water Lilies’ would be created, becoming one of the most iconic works in the history of art.

Latour-Marliac Temple-sur-Lot

This is where it all began. This historic nursery still preserves the legacy of Joseph Bory Latour-Marliac and the National Water Lily Collection. The Cabinet of Curiosities Temple-sur-Lot

Combining heritage, botany, art and innovation, the Cabinet of Curiosities offers a unique experience that helps visitors understand the links between Lot-et-Garonne and Monet’s universal body of work.

Through an exhibition design conceived by Thierry Huau (artistic director and landscape architect), the exhibition tells the story of:

The story of Joseph Bory Latour-Marliac.
The creation of the first colourful hybrid water lilies and their triumphant presentation at the 1889 World’s Fair.
His meeting with Claude Monet.
The influence of this botanical innovation on the history of art and gardens.

A unique tour that sheds a fresh light on the world of the Water Lilies.

The Gajac Museum Villeneuve-sur-Lot

The story of the Water Lilies continues. To mark the centenary, the Musée de Gajac is showcasing two contemporary artists whose works engage with Monet’s world.

The Japanese painter Hiramatsu Reiji revisits the landscapes of Giverny in a sensitive tribute to Impressionism, whilst the Italian artist Monica Gorini explores light, colour and memory through contemporary installations inspired by the Water Lilies.
